Worlds Comprehensive Medical Treatments:
Introducing Alternative and Natural Treatments from Around the World
Publisher: Fragrance Journal LTD, Tokyo, Japan, 2008.
This recently published book by Yukako Iino, based on her first hand research, contains a chapter on COMPASSIONATE TOUCH for Those in Later Life Stages™, describing it as a healing modality for elderly people and those nearing the end of life, “bringing relaxation and softening anxiety and physical pain through gentle massage and utilizing focus in communication, not just through the physical touch or massage but also considering social and spiritual aspects as well.”
Ms. Iino relates personal insights gained while interacting with a variety of residents in a skilled nursing facility in northern California. She says she found herself worrying about her ability to speak English until realizing that she was the one “putting up the wall." That awareness enabled her to relax and focus her attention with the individuals she met in the care facility.

Ms. Iino writes about feeling particularly moved by the connection she felt with one woman as she was moisturizing and massaging her hands. This resident could not communicate well through words. However, at some point she began to squeeze the author's hands in an attempt to return the gift of touch that she was receiving.
Ms. Iino’s book also contains a chapter on Gayle McDonald’s pioneering work: Massage for People Living with Cancer.
